Having won its last two tournaments, the Southern Select 16 and Under AAU basketball team travelled to Orlando, Florida last Thursday for the 2011 AAU Super Showcase. During the intense July AAU period, the Select has captured the Under Armour Hard in the Paint Basketball Classic championship in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Peach State Summer Showcase (click here for Peach State highlights of Southern Select) in Aiken, South Carolina. The 2011 AAU Super Showcase in Orlando was the final tournament for a team that has competed in high profile tournaments in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, and South Carolina during the Spring and Summer of 2011.
As the team's record suggests, Southern Select has talented players who play well together. Augusta, Georgia, natives Kyle Doyle (T.W. Josey), Frank Booker (Westside High), Isaac Williams (Hiram High), and Ronald Jones (Butler High) lead the way. Doyle and Jones are solid inside players who combine a good shooting touch and the ability to face up and drive to the basket with unselfish play. The two frontline players regularly break down bigger defenders and score or find each other, as well as the team's very capable outside shooters, for great scoring opportunities. Booker can catch and shoot as well as any high school player, and his size and ball handling skills enable him to score in various ways. Williams' shooting stroke and the solid guard play of Rashaud Lee (Richmond Academy) and Khalil Carter (Breh Tech, Montgomery, AL) make Southern Select a well rounded team.
After a particularly difficult pool assignment and a few bad bounces, the Southern Select was unable to end the summer with three consecutive tournament championships. View the video below to see the Southern Select compete in its first two pool games on Friday, July 22nd. The team defeats the Tennessee Chosen Few to open the tournament with a 1-0 record, but a loss to the Garner Road Bulldogs, who later proceed to reach the Showcase championship game, drops Southern Select's record to 1-1.
