Region 3 AAA Cheat Sheet

The region standings are getting interesting as local boys high school basketball teams approach the end of the regular season.  HS Hoops analyzes Tuesday's key match ups:

Game of the Night
Westside Patriots (13-6, 5-2) at Thomson Bulldogs (18-2, 7-0) 6:30 P.M.

Like last Tuesday, the Westside Patriots appear in the HS Hoops "Game of the Night," seeking to extend a 5 game winning streak and, more importantly, grab a share of first place in the sub region 3B AAA standings in a road game against the Thomson Bulldogs.  The task is easier said than done as Thomson, the sub region leader, has already logged a win against the Patriots at Westside.  A Bulldog win would clinch a #1 seed in the region tournament and likely send the Patriots into a three way tie (with Richmond Academy and Josey) for second place.

HS Hoops will get its first look at the Bulldogs as these sub region 3B AAA leaders look to distance themselves from peers and secure byes in the fast approaching region tournament.  Check back for highlights soon after the game.

Glenn Hills Spartans (10-11, 4-3) at Washington County Golden Hawks (18-0, 7-0) 7:30 P.M.

Washington County, the area's lone undefeated team, is red hot following Friday's sub region 3A AAA road win at Butler's home gym in Friday's HS Hoops "Game of the Night."  The Golden Hawks can clinch a #1 seed in the region tournament with a win tonight at home.  Glenn Hills will likely need a win to keep a share of second place in the sub region (if Butler defeats Hepzibah Tuesday).  The Spartans had mixed results over the weekend, beating sub region rival Cross Creek Friday before losing to Westside Saturday.

Upset Alerts
Many underdog squads have the opportunity to deal setbacks to teams hoping to climb back into one of the top two sub region positions.

At Richomond Academy, the Harlem Bulldogs (9-12, 2-5) will attempt to spoil the Musketeers' bid to reach a 5-3 sub region 3B AAA record.  Freshman guard Reggie Reid (featured here) and his Bulldog teammates will have to play well and contain Richmond's high scoring guard Jonathan Bradley to knock the Musketeers out of second place.

And the Hepzibah Rebels look to extend their recent winning ways with a home upset over the Butler Bulldogs, who have fallen into a tie for second place with Glenn Hills in sub region 3A AAA.  After losing to Washington County at home in Friday's HS Hoops "Game of the week," the Bulldogs may have found some rhythm Saturday with a win against defending AA state champion Greater Atlanta Christian in the William Avery Invitational.

Finally, the Josey Eagles (13-8, 4-3) will look to snap a two game (at Westside and at home versus Richmond) skid and stay in the race for second place in sub region 3B AAA in a road game against the Grovetown Warriors (5-14, 0-6).

Stay tuned in to HS Hoops as we keep fans up to speed with Augusta area region 3 AAA teams.  And look for HS Hoops to expand coverage soon to other regions and teams.
