Live Blogging: "Championship Weekend Live"

10:42 PM "Championship Weekend Live" UPDATE:
Westside 64, Thomson 56

Booker finishes with an unofficial 32 points, and the Westside Patriots earn a spot in the region 3-AAA championship game against sub region foe Josey.  The two teams split sub region games this season.  Click here to see highlights from the most recent contest.

We are now up to date with the final results of the four games of interest in tonight's edition of "Championship Weekend Live."  Stay tuned for video highlights from all four games.  The Josey-WACO highlights may be up tonight.  The others will be tomorrow.  And tomorrow's edition of Championship Weekend Live will include the region 3-AAA championship game (Josey-Westside), the region 7-A championship game (featuring Aquinas), and hopefully the region 2-AA championship game, depending on the outcome of the Wildcats' semifinal match up.

10:19 PM "Championship Weekend Live" UPDATE:

Aquinas 58, Hancock County 44 - Final

Aquinas's recent work is quite impressive.  Beating Hancock County by a wide margin is particularly telling after Hancock just last week handed Washington County its first defeat of the season.  And Aquinas came closer to defeating the red hot Westside Patriots (click here for highlights, some of the most impressive of this high school basketball season, of that game) than any other Westside opponent during the past three weeks.

10:16 PM "Championship Weekend Live" UPDATE:
Effingham County 38, Ware County 49 - Final

The Rebels' comeback falls short.

10:00 PM "Championship Weekend Live" UPDATE:
Westside 51, Thomson 37

Another quarter of play, another big performance by Westside's guard trio.  The three bombers scored all 16 of the Patriots' points, and Booker logged another 10 points, bringing his total to 27 for the game!

9:36 PM "Championship Weekend Live" UPDATE:
Westside 35, Thomson 21

The Patriots are still on track.  Westside closed the half with three straight three pointers, the first by Ronald Campbell and the next two by Frank Booker.  Booker, the team's leading scorer, has recorded 17 first half points.  This is not the first time Booker has hurt the Thomson Bulldogs this season.  Click here for highlights of the Patriots' win at Thomson weeks ago.  The win moved Westside into a tie with the Bulldogs, and the Patriots have since widened the lead with region peers.

9:28 PM "Championship Weekend Live" UPDATE:
Effingham County 33, Ware County 39 - 4:53 remaining in 4th quarter

9:18 PM "Championship Weekend Live" UPDATE:

Westside 18, Thomson 8

During the first quarter of play, Westside's guards have continued their recent hot shooting.  Frank Booker, Ronald Campbell, and Kendall Harris, Westside's potent trio of guards have scored all 18 points.  And Harris has scored 8 of those 18.  Click here to see the highlights of Westside's quarterfinal win versus Burke County.  These three guards putting on a shooting clinic in that game.  And, frankly, they have been doing so for weeks!

"Championship Weekend Live" UPDATE:  EFFINGHAM CO vs WARE

Ware County leads 23-12 at the half.  This is not a misprint.  Check out this short clip of a Ware defender sealing off the paint and taking a painful charge towards the end of the first half.  Plays like this have held Effingham County to such a low score. Introduction to "Championship Weekend Live"

The readers of the Augusta Basketball Report are accustomed to our publishing stories, game summaries and video highlights of the basketball being played in the greater Augusta area.  This weekend is "Championship Weekend."  Tonight we are focusing our coverage of 4 games involving teams with ties to the Augusta area.  And just as the teams who have advanced to the semifinals of their respective region tournaments have done, we are attempting to "elevate our game," bringing you more timely coverage from more locations.  Keep up with the updates in this blog post to find scores, highlights and commentary from four key region tournament semifinal contests:

Region 3-AAA
Josey defeats Washington County 46-42 - Short highlights and commentary from this defensive battle are coming soon.  And we will publish complete highlights (click here for the highlight video from Josey's quarterfinal win) before the night ends.

Thomson vs Westside - This contest between sub region rivals is moments away from tip off.  We will update you with scores and information about individual scorers.

Region 7-A
Aquinas vs Hancock County - We aim to post a full highlight video featuring Fighting Irish guards Ahmed Hill and Michael Scott, along with their Aquinas teammates, before the end of the evening.

Region 2-AAAA
Effingham County vs Ware County
Readers may wonder why we are following the Effingham County Rebels.  We are at the region 2-AAAA tournament because Evans, Lakeside, and Greenbrier compete in this region.  All three teams have been eliminated (look for the highlights from Evans' close loss to Liberty High tomorrow).  But we started following the 25-1 Rebels when they visited Evans weeks ago.  6'7" sophomore forward Jakeenan Grant is not only one of the states best players, he is also the AAU teammate of Aquinas guards Michael Scott and Ahmed Hill.  The three play for the Augusta based Georgia Stampede, one of the top AAU teams in the country.
