Class AA Team Spotlight:  Landrum Cardinals 7-0

Coming off a 24-4 season that ended in the Lower State finals, it was safe to assume that the Landrum Cardinals were going to expect a big season.  The question simply became how much would the transition from class A to Class AA affect them.  While the Cardinals have still not answered that question, it is clear that they have a talented squad and have decimated everyone on the schedule so far.

Coach Lyn Smith and the Cardinals returned their three top scorers from last season in seniors Mark Wilson, Trustan Whiteside, and Daniel Bridges (featured above).  That trio has combined to average 47 points a game so far this season. As a team, Landrum averages 87 points a game, and Bridges and Whiteside have been putting up monster numbers – Bridges averages 18.5 points and 11.5 rebounds, and Whiteside adds 13.5 points 8.7 assists and 8.5 rebounds.  In addition, transfer guard Chris Shulman is averaging over 12 points a game.  Shulman exploded for 25 in their most recent blowout victory, a 92-59 pasting of Blacksburg.

The Cardinals, who are currently ranked the #5 team in Class AA, won back to back region titles in Class A and appear to be an overwhelming favorite to repeat that feat this year. They have not been tested yet and it will be interesting to see how the Cardinals perform as they advance deep into the playoffs and face off with other top teams.
