Aiken Knocks off Region Leader Lexington

Aiken handed Lexington its first region loss Tuesday with a 58-42 win at home. The win improves the Hornet's record to 11-5 overall, and 2-1 in region play.

The Wildcats rushed out to a 16-10 first quarter lead, as Phillip Blake had success in the paint early, scoring 10 of the Wildcat's 16 points. Blake also stood tall in the zone defense, making it hard for Aiken to get to the basket. Aiken struggled early, hitting only four field goals in the first quarter.

The second quarter was a different story for both teams.  The Wildcats posted only 9 points while Aiken scored 17. Scoring leader Shawn Moore caught fire and scored 10 of the Hornet's 17 second quarter points. The Aiken defense also forced a stretch of four consecutive Lexington turnovers, resulting in a quick 8-0 run to take the 27-25 lead at half.

Aiken never looked back.  The Hornets outscored Lexington 31-17, including a 12-2 run that dashed the Wildcats' hopes.  Shawn Moore led the way for Aiken with 18 points. Ryan Mckie scored 11 points, with 8 coming in the second half.  Lexington's Phillip Blake scored 20 points in the losing effort.
