Butler Wins Earns #1 Seed

In Friday's highly anticipated match up, the Butler Bulldogs, playing at home on senior night, defeated Glenn Hills 72-61, claiming sub region 3B-AAAA's first seed leading into the post season.  The win completes a two-game sweep of the formidable Spartans by the Bulldogs, a significant feat considering Glenn Hills is otherwise undefeated.

Butler came out of the locker room blazing, jumping to a 19-9 lead and silencing Glenn Hills' fans.  The Bulldogs shared the ball, knocked down perimeter shots and scored at the basket.  But midway through the second quarter, Glenn Hills' Santo Nina began knocking down shots, including two three pointers before Butler took a 37-29 lead into halftime.

Glenn Hills continued to gain momentum in the third quarter, going on a 16-7 run and taking its first lead of the game at 45-44.  Maurice O'Bannon provided a huge spark during the stretch with two "tip dunks."  The lead wouldn't last long as Ronald Jones and Don Coleman got to the hole consistently, enabling the Bulldogs to take a 53-48 lead before securing the win and the regular season sub region title.

Butler's Don Coleman led all scorers with 20 points.  Santo Nina led Glenn Hills with 17.

After finishing the regular season in the top two sub region spots, both teams have earned a bye into Wednesday's region tournament quarterfinals in Statesboro.  Glenn Hills will face Wayne County, and Butler will play the winner of Monday's Hephzibah-South Effingham game.

  1. As long as Butler doesn’t have any let-downs or overlook anybody, and stays focused there no reason this can’t be a championship year.

  2. I agree. A complete team inside and outside with great senior leadership in Jones and Leverette. And they can score too (Coleman), which always helps.
