Laney In Final Four... Sound Familiar?

Wednesday night's matchup between Laney and Macon County can be summed up in two words: 'All Laney'.  The Wildcats defeated the Bulldogs by a score of, 73-46. The win puts Laney (20-8) in the Class AA, Final Four, for the second consecutive year (of course Laney won it all last year).

Before the game started, I didn't know what to expect from the Macon County basketball team. They were a #4 seed that had knocked off a #1 and #2 seed already, yet had a mediocre record of 18-12. Their fans also traveled very well, filling up the visitor's seating section before the game started.

The Class AA cinderella story that was Macon County, would soon come to an end.

From the tip-off, Laney displayed their dominance in almost every aspect of the game. They out-rebounded, out-hustled, and out-shot the Bulldogs. The visiting fans never got a reason to cheer and rattle the young Laney team. The Laney starting five consisted of two freshman (Keeling and Jasper), two sophomores (Walker and Brooks), and one junior (Hightower). To start a team that young, that deep in the state playoffs is unheard of!

Sophomore Jashawn Brooks set the tone early for the Wildcats, hitting three of their first four shots, tallying an assist on the remaining shot. Laney jumped out to a quick 23-11 first quarter lead and never let off the gas.

Laney's full-court press proved too much for the Bulldogs, forcing a flurry of turnovers, leading to easy transition buckets for the Wildcats. Laney gave up just nine made field goals in the entire first half, the other four Bulldog points coming from the free-throw line.

The first half trends continued in the second half for the Wildcats, as Macon County simply had no answer.

Laney was led by Jervon Walker with 18 points. Jashawn Brooks scored 15 points, while Zep Jasper tallied 14 to help Laney defeat Macon County at home.

Laney advances to play Greater Atlanta Christian in a Final Four matchup, Friday, March 1st.
