Will's Weekly Hoops Report

From now on my hoops report will be broken down into two parts middle school/high school and college/ CSRA player updates. Comments are welcomed. I hope you enjoy!

Middle School

The GAIS Eagles MS teams 1 & 2 went a combined 6-0 on the week. Eagles MS 1 improved to 8-3 for the season while Eagles MS 2 are 5-0. Five of the eight victories for the Eagles MS 1 team have come against high school jv teams. GAIS Eagles MS 1 has a tall order ahead of them as they face 6'7 eighth grader Gabe Bryant and the Carolina Chargers Saturday at 1pm at Evans Middle School.

High School

In the biggest game of the week, the Glenn Hills Spartans squeaked by the Laney Wildcats 68-66 in front of a sell out crowd at Glenn Hills last Tuesday. While most teams search for an Identity early in the season, the Spartans are sure of themselves as they bring suffocating defense (caused 20 turnovers Tuesday) and a balanced scoring attack as they did last year. Aubrey McRae led the Spartans with 22 points and 3 other players scored in double figures. Laney was led by Christian Keeling's 18.

At Aquinas Saturday night, it was a family affair on the sidelines as brothers Bernie (Aquinas) and Zack Norris (Keenan) battled one another. Marquette signee Ahmed Hill scored 12 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter to lead Aquinas past Keenan 62-58. There was also some familiarity among the players as Keenan point guard and South Carolina signee Marcus Stroman, and Hill were AAU teammates for 2 years with the Southern Stampede. Stroman finished with 13 points after being shut out in the first half.

There were some other games in the area that deserve some recognition. Evans defeated North Augusta 52-43 and improved to 6-0 behind Kameron Mason's 17 points. Lakeside took down Westside 54-41led by Sam Powell's 18 points. The Panthers are 4-0 giving Columbia County two undefeated teams. Region play should be interesting this year. The GAIS Eagles Varsity North lost in overtime to New Faith and Eagles Varsity South went 1-2 for the week.

I can not wrap up the high school hoops section without acknowledging the best individual performer. My player of the week award goes to Aubrey McRae. McRae scored 22 points while leading his team to victory over Laney one of the best teams in the State. I predicted McRae would play this year with a chip on his shoulder. This kid is a natural scorer and can hurt you in many ways. When mentioning the best players in the area McRae's name is not often in the conversation but trust me he is right up there with the best, and I have a feeling he will prove it to everyone this season.

CSRA Boys Top 10

1. Glenn Hills

2. Aquinas

3. Thomson

4. Laney

5. Evans

6. Washington County

7. Augusta Christian

8. GAIS

9. Midland Valley

10. Butler

Glenn Hills @ Laney- Last week when these two teams met Laney shot 58% (21-36) from the free throw line and committed 20 turnovers. The Wildcats start a sophomore at point guard in Zep Jasper whom I think will play a lot better at home. With that said the Wildcats will do a better job at taking care of the ball. I expect this to be a defensive battle with both teams earning plenty of trips to the charity stripe due to the aggressive play. Although I think this veteran Spartan team is comfortable playing in a hostile environment, I am going to go with Laney in this one. Coming off two tough losses and the revenge factor coming into play, the Wildcats will be focused and determined.
