GAIS Eagles Win Southeast Regionals!

The GAIS Eagles defeated the Nashville Warriors 83-72 in the NCHBC Southeast Regional championship game, earning a #1 seed in the upcoming homeschool national championship tournament.  The Eagles defeated the Knoxville Ambassadors (68-35) and Aaron Academy (69-61) en route to the championship game.  Here we will highlight some of the most exciting moments of the semifinal game.

Semifinals: GAIS 26, Aaron 27 - Eagles Fight to Stay Close in First Half
GAIS, the tournament's #1 overall seed, trailed 25-19 midway through the second quarter after guard Kyle Hodnett scored 5 consecutive points for Aaron.  But seniors Dominic Brown and Matt Miller led a 7-2 Eagles' scoring run to cut Aaron's lead to 27-26 just before half time.  (See below)

Semifinals: GAIS 29, Aaron 32 - Outlook Uncertain for GAIS at Halftime
Despite stretches of solid play, GAIS trailed at halftime, 32-29.  After being called for five offensive fouls, the Eagles had been unable to get to the basket or to the foul line for easy points.  But the Eagles stayed in the game by playing extremely hard and knocking down some difficult shots.  (See below)

Semifinals: GAIS 42, Aaron 34 - GAIS Opens Third Quarter with a Run
Matt Miller made a three pointer from the right wing on the first play of the third quarter, igniting a 13-2 GAIS run.  The Eagles appeared to be in control, leading 42-34.  (See below)

Semifinals: GAIS 51, Aaron 55 - Aaron comes Roaring Back; GAIS Answers
Hodnett and guard Dion Fitts lead Aaron back into the game, and Fitts' gives Aaron a 55-51 lead in the fourth quarter.  But GAIS's Brown promptly nails a clutch three pointer of his own to trim the deficit to 1 point.  And on the next possession, Austin Crown buries a pull up jumper to give GAIS a 56-55 lead.  (See below)

Semifinals: GAIS 69, Aaron 61 (Final Score) - GAIS's Big Finish
After Fitts buries a three pointer to tie the game at 60, Miller nails answers with a three of his own to give the Eagles a 63-60 lead with 1:26 remaining.  Two Crown free throws and one rim shaking Dominic Brown dunk later, GAIS had secured a 69-61 win and a birth in the NCHBC Southeast Regional championship game.  (See below)

Semifinals: Notable Performers - Jones and Massenburg
GAIS senior Paul Jones and eighth grader TJ Massenburg made a huge impact defensively.  Jones rebounded and defended the interior, drawing charges and generally getting the Eagles extra possessions.  And Massenburg did an admirable job defending Aaron's 6'8" senior center Jo Bobbit.  Massenburg blocked four shots and grabbed important rebounds.  (See below)
