SC AAAA Quarterfinals State Playoffs
South Pointe at Irmo
When teams come into a playoff game with a combined record of 47-1, you know it’s an epic matchup.
This quarterfinals game didn’t disappoint. With Irmo facing its stiffest competition, maybe all season,
they responded in the final minute with tough defense and crucial shots. Irmo, state champions two years ago, showed they still know how to close out big games.
South Pointe (21-2) came into the undefeated home of the Yellow Jackets with no fear. They used that
confidence to grab an early 7-3 lead. The Irmo fans and players seemed shocked. After a perfect regular
season, they had not had a competitive game in a long time.
Irmo (27-0) regained focus quickly and responded with a 14-0 run. South Pointe would show some toughness with an 11-4 run that lasted all the way into the second quarter. However, Irmo would outplay South Pointe to take a 34-25 lead into the half.
Something must have been said to fire up the visitors because they came out and dominated the third quarter. South Pointe outscored Irmo 24-13 in the 3rd. After scoring only 25 in the first half, they scored 24 points in the third quarter to take a 49-47 lead into the fourth quarter.
The teams continued trading buckets and with just three minutes remaining, the game rested, tied 53-53. In the last few minutes, Irmo would use lockdown defense and big shots from their seniors to pull out the win. Alex Quillen scored 7 of his 9 fourth quarter points in the final three minutes. Gamecock commit, Justin McKie, put the game in the bag with a bucket to put them up four with 24 seconds left.
Justin McKie finished with 11 points. Javis Howard added 14, and Detrek Browning lead Irmo with 16
points. South Pointe was led by Tyreece Brice’s 18 points.
