Garden City Classic Tournament Recap (December 3-5)

The Augusta Eagles finished in sixth place in a field of eight teams in the Garden City Classic. The Eagles exit the tournament with three wins and four losses after losing to Augusta Prep and Curtis Baptist and defeating Dominion Christian.

Thursday, December 3rd
Augusta Prep - 66
Augusta Eagles - 55

A strong second quarter by Austin Crown, Matthew Miller, and Nathaniel Crown narrowed the Augusta Prep lead from eight points to two points at halftime. The Eagles had trouble in the first half keeping Augusta Prep off of the offensive glass as Prep grabbed 8 offensive rebounds, leading to 6 early points by Daniel Hull. John Paul Lynn led Prep in scoring at the break with 11 points. Nathaniel Crown led the Eagles with 11 points at the break.

Prep built an eleven point lead in the fourth quarter on sharp shooting from Lynn, who had 12 points in the quarter, 20 points in the second half, and 31 points in the game. The Eagles were able to make runs but could never even the game or pull ahead. The Eagles were led in scoring by Nathaniel Crown (20 points), Matt Miller (14 points), and Austin Crown (10 points). Miller and Nathaniel Crown also chipped in with 10 and 12 rebounds respectively.

Augusta Prep's superior rebounding performance combined with a lackluster defensive showing by the Eagles allowed Augusta Prep to maximize their opportunities around the basket all night. Attacking the basket and bypassing the temptation to settle for long shots enabled a 49% field goal percentage as more than half of their shots came from inside the paint. The Eagles were less successful at getting easy shots, leading to a 33% field goal percentage.

With the loss, the Eagles moved to a 2-3 record.
