Westside and Josey, regular season region rivals and two of the area's best teams, met today in summer league action at Butler High School. The teams feature some of our area's best players, including senior Frank Booker (Westside), senior Kyle Doyle (Josey), and sophomore Darius Williams (Josey).
Upon entering the gym, an old friend and current Cross Creek head coach Carlos Carter pointed out that he assumed ABR would be at the game because Booker was playing. I responded that along with Booker, Doyle and Williams would be likely to provide excitement. With the score tied at 18 late in the first half, the first three possessions we filmed did not disappoint, as Booker split multiple defenders and finished a circus shot, Doyle sized up a Westside defender and buried a three pointer, and Williams blew by a Patriot defender with a left handed drive before stopping and drilling a baseline jump shot. See these plays in the video directly below.
But both team's younger players played big roles in this game. Westside's Rashon Taylor and Quinten Phillips both played well during a second half run that put Westside ahead. But on after tying the game at 53 and creating a turnover late, Josey's Dannie Demmons split a Westside trap in the backcourt and found an open teammate for a buzzer beating score to give the Eagles a 55-53 victory. See 2nd half action in the video below.
