Greenbrier and Hephzibah: Thoughts from the Weekend (12-9-12)
During our live coverage of Tuesday's games, my partner Will Avery tweeted that the Greenbrier and Hephzibah girls teams, playing each other that night for the second time in five days, were his "sleeper" teams. We have given a good bit of attention to the Laney, Westside, and Cross Creek girls teams early in this season. Avery's comment caused us to dig into the highlights of these two squads.
After doing some homework, I agree with Will! The Greenbrier Wolfpack (5-1) is off to its best start in recent memory. The team has two very good shooters in senior KaRa Thompson and sophomore Jennifer McMahan. And Sophomore Morgan Taylor gets to the basket and scores very well. The Wolfpack's lone loss came to Hephzibah (Tuesday) immediately after defeating the Lady Rebels in a 75-73 thriller.
Hephzibah's win over Greenbrier Tuesday ignited a three game streak that included wins over Grovetown and Evans over the weekend. Guards Shannon Wimberly and Shashana Miller are fun to watch. Both shoot and handle the ball well.
Both teams face difficult tests this week. On Tuesday evening, Hephzibah hosts Thomson, a team that competed well against a very impressive Westside team Friday. And Greenbrier hosts Burke County Friday. The Lady Wolfpack narrowly beat the Bears earlier this season.
