Friday's region V battle was decided at the free throw line as White Knoll's Najee Garvin buried two with 6 seconds remaining to defeat Aiken 60-59 at home. White Knoll head coach Brett Jones appreciated the pressure of the moment. “I’ve taken those shots. I know those shots are hard at the end like that. Najee did well, those free throws could have easily gone the other way,” said Jones after the game.
After a fast start to the game by White Knoll, Aiken used a 14-5 first half run to take a 28-24 lead into intermission. But sophomore standout Emarius Logan scored 14 3rd quarter points for White Knoll, and Aiken trailed by 9 points in the 4th quarter. After Aiken clawed its way back and eventually took a 59-58 lead, Garvin supplied the game deciding heroics after driving to the lane, drawing a foul, and making two free throws on the final possession.
“This team keeps fighting. Emarius had a big night for us, and Garvin was huge in the fourth, but this was a huge team win for us,” Coach Jones said. “We aren’t the oldest team. We have only one senior, and a lot of freshman and sophomores. This team will be good, really good, in two years. The whole team fought hard for this one.”
Aiken and Lexington now lead region V with records of 4-2, while White Knoll and North Augusta trail by only one game with 3-3 region records.
