In Thursday night's matchup between Aiken and South Aiken, the Hornets defeated South Aiken, 55-47. The win improves Aiken's record to 6-4 in sub region AAAA region 5 play, 16-8 overall. The Hornets finished regular season region play in third place, behind Lexington and North Augusta.
After Shawn Moore hit a three on the opening possession, Aiken gained a lead that they held onto the entire game. Moore shot great early and got to the rim a handful of times through out the first half. Moore hit his second three-pointer, giving Aiken an early 8-1 lead. Richard Davis scored 6 of South Aiken's 9 first quarter points to allow the Thoroughbred's to stay within striking distance, trailing 12-9 at the end of the first quarter.
An 11-3 run towards the start of the second quarter allowed Aiken a little breathing room, going into halftime leading 26-17. The T-breds came roaring back in the second half. A Latrell Brown layup brought South Aiken within one (35-34.)
The game remained close for most of the rest of the third quarter. The crowd erupted as Aiken's Justin "Smitty" Smith hit a buzzer-beating three (his second of the game) to end the third. With their backs against the wall, the Hornets rattled off six straight points to start the fourth. These six points were part of a 13-2 run that all but sealed the game for Aiken, as the Hornets held on to win 55-47.
Shawn Moore led Aiken with 19 points. Richard Davis led South Aiken with 16 points.
