North Augusta Sneaks Past Aiken to Battle for First in Region

On Tuesday, February 5, North Augusta defeated Aiken 66-63. The two teams were tied for second in the region with a 5-3 record prior to the game. North Augusta is now 6-3 in the region while Aiken's loss puts them at 5-4 in region 5AAAA play.

North Augusta started the game on a 12-2 run by working the ball down low. Aiken would answer by knocking down a few three pointers late in the first quarter to cut into the lead and make it an 18-20 game after the first quarter. The Hornets would take control in the second period allowing North Augusta to score just eight in the quarter. Aiken had a commanding 11-point lead at the end of the half.

The Yellow Jackets scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, including Christian Davis' 4 points in the last 11 seconds of the game. Davis stripped the ball from an Aiken player and scored at the other end to give the Jackets a 1-point lead. Aiken had one last chance but Davis intercepted a pass and made both free throws after being fouled to seal the deal.

North Augusta is in a race with Lexington for first place in the region. Aiken will face cross-town rival, South Aiken, on Thursday, February 7. North Augusta will travel to Dutch Fork on Thursday to stay in the first place race. Lexington will travel to their rival White Knoll, which is a very young, but capable team. Thursday will prove to be a very exciting night for South Carolina's games.
