Area Middle School Teams Set to Battle in Christmas Tournament

The first Annual Augusta Metros Middle School Christmas Tournament starts today. Action will tip off at 4 pm at Evans Middle School and 5 pm at Aquinas High School. In its first year the tournament has drawn the interest of 22 boys' and girls' basketball teams. All of the teams hail from the CSRA except the Gwinnett Barons, who are from the Atlanta area.

This event is what many teams and coaches have been waiting for. It is a chance to see how they stack up against middle schools from other counties. Three of Columbia County's top four boys' teams (Riverside, Columbia, and Evans) and the top two girls' teams (Riverside and Stallings Island) are participating. The boys' favorites to compete for the title in Richmond County, Langford and Glenn Hills, will be on hand as well as the girls' favorite, Sego. North Augusta Middle will represent Aiken County. The National Home School Tip-Off Champions GAIS Eagles are the host team.

With the teams that I have mentioned above, this will surely be an exciting and competitive event. The less heralded teams will come in with a chip on their shoulders looking to knock off one of the Goliaths and make a name for themselves. The top teams will have to remain focused while taking the other teams' best shot. The best thing about tournaments is that you do not have to be the better team to move on; you just have to be better that game!
