Guard Jashawn Brooks, who spent pool play draining 3 pointers, used all of his weapons during the semifinals and the championship game, scoring in the post, creating opportunities off the dribble, and blocking shots. Dontae Coleman continued to set up the Kings' shooters for good scoring opportunities, but he distinguished himself further in the championship game by successfully challenging Taylor Made's 6'9" post player, scoring at the rim and off of the pick and roll to get the Kings' offensive attack started early. AJ Gray continued to play impressively, shooting well from long range, attacking the basket for scoring opportunities, and shooting mid range jump shots. But his most valuable contribution during the championship game came amid a flurry of steals that led to fast break scoring opportunities for his teammates and himself. Quinton Phillips defended the basket well, blocking shots and stealing passes. He also ran the court well and scored in transition. Reggie Reid also continued to attack the basket, finish, and provide easy scoring opportunities for teammates.
After watching the Southern Kings 14 and Under team play over ten games in the past two weeks, I can confidently say that this group played its best when the challenge was the toughest. As you will see in the video below, it is a good thing they did. The Taylor Made Playaz are huge, and they are good. In the team's only loss in Las Vegas, they probably made their coach as proud as ever. And he is probably also as optimistic as ever, for this group of players should have a bright basketball future.
