Southern Kings 14u Return from Vegas with Heads High

The Southern Kings of Augusta 14 and Under AAU basketball team recently returned to Augusta, Georgia, as the runner up of the 2011 Fab 48 Showcase in Las Vegas, Nevada.  After combining the AAU National tournament in Orlando, Florida, and the Las Vegas tournament, the Kings played 14 games in 14 days, winning 11.  In Las Vegas, the Kings won 7 straight games before finally being defeated by the Taylor Made Playaz in the championship game.

Today we highlight the play of the Southern Kings during pool play of the Fab 48 Showcase.  The team's superb guard play, intense defense, and solid inside presence was on full display as the Kings sailed through pool play undefeated on their way to the championship round.

As the highlights reveal, the Kings use a well rounded attack.  Jashawn Brooks (#5) shows his shooting range after being repeatedly set up for open 3 pointers by Dontae Coleman (#1) and others.  Coleman, a competitor who played his best in Las Vegas during the team's toughest games, can drive and score using either hand.  Reggie Reid (#25), joining the Kings for the first time this summer, is explosive off the dribble.  He finishes well at the rim and plays very good defense, consistently forcing turnovers that result in easy scores.  AJ Gray (#4) absolutely does it all.  He scores from long range, attacks the basket, handles and distributes the ball effectively, and wreaks havoc defensively.  Gray also did some of his best work in Las Vegas during the Kings' toughest games when the team needed his contributions most. Inside player Quinton Phillips (#24) combines tough defense and solid rebounding with a nice shooting touch on the perimeter.  And Jamari Griffin (#23) has good skills in the post, including a jump hook with either hand.
