Laney's Newcomers Impress

I was happy to see that during their Hoops Preview scrimmage against South Carolina powerhouse Keenan High School, the Laney Wildcats appeared as good as I had imagined.  With a brand new group of core players, the Wildcats are carrying forward the culture of last year's state championship team:  tough defense and unselfish, disciplined offense.

The core of this year's team is a mix of newcomers and youngsters who watched last year's senior dominated group set a great example.  Sophomores Tommy Smith (#21) and Jaylen Taylor (#24) and senior Quentin Hall (#1) all played well.  And sophomore shooting guard Jashawn Brooks (#22) was very impressive.  Brooks shot well from deep, scored in the mid range off the dribble, and played solid defense.  The Wildcats should be a force in our area for a long time.
